What is a Web Series?

What exactly is a web series? According to Wikipedia “A web series is a series of scripted videos, generally in episodic form, released on the internet or also by mobile or cellular phone, and part of new emerging medium called web television.” And why should you be interested in a web series? Well if you enjoy watching videos on your phone tuning into a good web series could be a great addition to your current entertainment choices.

You may ask what makes a web series different from a TV show. Well there aren’t many differences. Television shows have a particular formats; usually TV series are 30 minutes or an hour long. Web series are made to be watched on the web so formats vary. More traditional web series are 5-30 minutes long. Some web series are even interactive with links and other digital elements. Due to technology the barrier for entry is low and anyone with a camera can create a web series.

Wondering where you can find some web series? Well you are probably watching a few web series already. Actually the series on Netflix count like “Luke Cage”, “Chewing Gum“, or “Orange is the New Black”. Some independent web series have grown so popular on the web that they occasionally transition to television like Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl”, which inspired the hit series “Insecure.”

This year independent web series “Tough Love” was nominated for an Emmy. The growing popularity of the web series is signaling an upward trend. As more television channels move to online streaming the format will definitely continue to grow.
